America è un brano noto tratto da uno dei capolavori del genere "musical": West Side Story scritto e diretto da Arthur Laurents, Stephen Sondheim e Leonard Bernstein nel 1957. Prende spunto dal romanzo "Romeo e Giulietta" di William Shakespeare e mette in scena la tribolata storia d'amore tra due ragazzi appartenenti a diverse fazioni. In questo caso la location è il quartiere Upper West Side di Manhattan e vede contrapporsi la banda dei portoricani con quella dei newyorkesi-anglosassoni; la canzone è uno dei momenti più conosciuti dello spettacolo e vede Anita inneggiare all'America disprezzando Porto Rico.
